How Claude Code and Copilot differ

GitHub Copilot started as autocomplete in the editor and grew outwards: chat, agent mode in the IDE, Copilot CLI in the terminal, and a cloud agent you assign work to on GitHub, which opens a pull request. Claude Code started as a terminal agent and grew the other way, into VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app and a web version with cloud sessions.

For a buyer, four differences matter most:

  • Inline completions. Copilot gives autocomplete-style suggestions as you type, unlimited on paid plans. Claude Code’s documentation describes an agent that reads code, edits files and runs commands; it does not list autocomplete-style suggestions.
  • Model choice. Copilot lets developers pick models from several vendors, including Claude. Claude Code uses Anthropic’s models only.
  • How usage is metered. Copilot gives each plan a monthly allowance of GitHub AI Credits, and you can buy more at $0.01 per credit. Claude sets limits per five-hour session, with Max plans raising the cap.
  • Where admin lives. Copilot is managed in your GitHub organisation, next to repository permissions. Claude Code is managed in your Claude Team or Enterprise workspace, alongside Claude chat.

What it costs in India

GitHub lists every Copilot plan in US dollars. For a team of 10 on monthly billing, Copilot Business is $190 a month and Claude Team standard seats are $250 ($200 on annual billing), before GST and card charges. Copilot is a coding product; a Claude Team seat also includes Claude chat for non-coding work.

Anthropic began showing rupee prices for Claude in 2026, with GST included, according to press reports; they are not on its public pricing page. Max 5x is a reported ₹11,999 a month and Max 20x ₹23,999 (reported; check in your account). Reports of the rupee prices for Pro and Team conflict, so we list those in USD; check the price in your Claude account before buying. On the web Claude takes cards; in the mobile apps the App Store or Google Play decides the payment options, and UPI was reported as not enabled. Every Claude plan is in our Claude pricing in India guide, and our AI tool prices in India page tracks every plan each month.

When GitHub Copilot is the better fit

Copilot suits teams whose work already runs through GitHub. Seats, policies and audit logs sit in the same organisation as your repositories, and content exclusion lets you keep chosen files away from Copilot. It supports more editors than Claude Code, including Visual Studio, Eclipse and Xcode, which helps if your developers do not all use VS Code or JetBrains. The free plan lets developers try it before you buy seats, and GitHub offers IP indemnity for unmodified suggestions when its filter is on.

When Claude Code is the better fit

Claude Code suits teams that want to hand work to an agent from wherever they are: a terminal, an IDE, the desktop app, the web, Slack or a CI pipeline. Its rules file, skills and hooks let you encode how your team works, and the same CLAUDE.md and MCP servers apply on every surface. If the team already uses Claude for documents and analysis, one Claude Team seat covers both. Our engineering team uses Claude Code daily, with a CLAUDE.md rules file in every repo.

Using both

The two tools sit well together. Copilot reads a CLAUDE.md file at the repository root as agent instructions, and Claude Code can read AGENTS.md, so one rules file can serve both. On Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise, third-party agents including Claude by Anthropic and OpenAI Codex can take tasks from GitHub; GitHub marks this as a preview. Cursor vs GitHub Copilot, briefly

Cursor is a separate AI code editor, while Copilot plugs into the editor you already use. On 13 Oct 2026 Cursor’s pricing page listed Free, Plus at $8 a month (Grok models only), Premium at $30 a month (cloud agents, AI code reviews and third-party models at API list price) and Teams from $30 per user a month with SSO and team-wide privacy settings, all in USD with taxes extra. Copilot Business at $19 per user a month is the lower team price of the two. Pick Cursor if your developers are willing to switch editors; pick Copilot if they want to stay in VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio or Xcode. Our Claude Code vs Cursor guide covers Cursor in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude models inside GitHub Copilot?

Yes. Copilot’s model list includes Anthropic Claude models, depending on your plan. That is different from Claude Code, which is Anthropic’s own agent; on Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise the Claude agent can also take tasks from GitHub, in preview.

Which is cheaper for a team of 10 in India?

Copilot Business: $190 a month for 10 seats, against $250 for 10 Claude Team standard seats on monthly billing ($200 annual). Both are before GST and card charges. A Claude Team seat also covers Claude for non-coding work.

Is our code used for training?

Not on business plans. GitHub does not use Copilot Business or Enterprise data to train its models, and Anthropic does not train on code sent to Claude Code under Team, Enterprise or API terms. Individual plans on both have their own privacy settings to check.

Does GitHub Copilot work in the terminal?

Yes. Copilot CLI is included in every Copilot plan, from Free to Enterprise, and supports MCP servers. Each interaction draws on your plan’s AI Credits.

Cursor or GitHub Copilot?

Cursor is its own AI code editor; Copilot plugs into VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse and Xcode. If your developers will not switch editors, Copilot is the simpler choice. See our Claude Code vs Cursor guide for more.

Can S3Techpulse set this up for us?

Yes. Our AI Coding Tools for Dev Teams package covers seat mix, rules files, MCP setup and cost monitoring, quoted to your team size.
